Amazon EC2 Plugin Moved to Google Project Hosting

Another plugin packaged and delivered !

The new and improved Amazon EC2 plugin is now on Google code !

The Amazon EC2 plugin can be used to monitor your EC2 instances, Elastic IPs, EBS volumes, snapshots and AMI images on Amazon's AWS Cloud. The plugin monitors the counts and state of your EC2 resources by querying the Amazon AWS API as well as keeps an eye on the Spot prices of EC2 instances. Because the plugin checks the status of your resources using the AWS API, no software or agent needs to be installed on your EC2 instances. Thus anytime you instantiate an EC2 instance, it is automatically "covered and monitored" by the plugin.

Go ahead, try it out......

Mikoomi moving to Google Projects

Mikoomi is an open source project on developing monitoring plugins for Zabbix. Zabbix is an enterprise class open source monitoring framework. It is one of the best kept secrets of open source monitoring! I was so impressed and intrigued by Zabbix and its developers, that I made a special trip to Latvia to meet them in the summer of 2010. And I was more than impressed by the team as well as the people of Latvia.

Some of the things that I like about Zabbix are:
  • the PHP based web interface
  • the ability to configure all aspects of monitored entities from the GUI interface
  • native ability to storage configuration and monitoring data in a relational database
  • extensible & scalable architecture allowing for single-server as well as distributed monitoring
  • the ability to develop plugins easily
  • the ability to create graphs on any monitored item
  • the ability to design screens using mutiple graphs and data items from the GUI
  • alerting capabilities (email, UI, SMS, etc.)
  • web monitoring
And the list goes on........

Mikoomi is an open source project that develops Zabbix plugins for a variety of things like "Cloud" resources (currently Amazon/AWS Cloud), NoSQL databases and the like. Currently the project is hosted on Mikoomi's own website, but I will be gradually moving the plugins to Google.

I am hoping that by moving the project hosting to Google (code.google.com for code and blogger for information), I can focus on developing the plugins and offload the task of hosting, backups, fending off spammers and bots and providing better distribution and notification to Google.

The first to be moved is the plugin for MongoDB.
