Some of the things that I like about Zabbix are:
- the PHP based web interface
- the ability to configure all aspects of monitored entities from the GUI interface
- native ability to storage configuration and monitoring data in a relational database
- extensible & scalable architecture allowing for single-server as well as distributed monitoring
- the ability to develop plugins easily
- the ability to create graphs on any monitored item
- the ability to design screens using mutiple graphs and data items from the GUI
- alerting capabilities (email, UI, SMS, etc.)
- web monitoring
Mikoomi is an open source project that develops Zabbix plugins for a variety of things like "Cloud" resources (currently Amazon/AWS Cloud), NoSQL databases and the like. Currently the project is hosted on Mikoomi's own website, but I will be gradually moving the plugins to Google.
I am hoping that by moving the project hosting to Google (code.google.com for code and blogger for information), I can focus on developing the plugins and offload the task of hosting, backups, fending off spammers and bots and providing better distribution and notification to Google.
The first to be moved is the plugin for MongoDB.
